California teacher is offering spare room to students whose parents have been deported
The Trump administration is cracking down hard on immigration, and at the moment, Congress has paused an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that is poised to deport an estimated 2,000 families. Because of this, many migrants in the US are extremely worried about their current position as American citizens.
However, in the wake of this crisis, an English teacher in California has inspired social media users with a heartwarming display of kindness after he and his wife offered to take in students whose parents have been deported and give them a place to stay.
James Tilton, a 30-year-old teacher from Lancaster, California, has a number of Hispanic students in his class. Tilton took to Twitter this week and uploaded two pictures of the room in question, along with the bed.
He captioned the post: "Students, I know I've talked to some of you about this and mentioned it in class. But, in light of recent statements from the President, it feels worth repeating: my wife and I are foster certified and have an extra room if your parents are deported and you need a place to stay."
He later added: "I'm so sorry you have to live with this fear. I can't imagine what that's like. But please know that I'm here if you want to talk or need a character reference for immigration court. If there's anything else I can do, please don't hesitate to let me know."
He continued: "And if there's anything I can do for your parents, I'd love to do that too. In the past, I've contacted senators and representatives to try to help. I can help you write a petition or organize a demonstration. Whatever might help. You and your family deserve so much better."
Tilton's post has since boasted over 30,000 retweets, and has been liked nearly 90,000 times. As if that wasn't enough, the educator has also launched a YouTube channel called Story Time Teen where he provides advice to struggling students. It just goes to show that a teacher who truly cares about their kids is a proper superhero.
