The dog who played Cheddar in 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' has died

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is perhaps the most beloved show on television, and a huge reason for that is the show's charming characters. From Jake Peralta to Captain Holt, every character in the Nine-Nine's precinct fills us with joy.

But perhaps no character made us smile more than Cheddar - the playful corgi of Captain Holt and his husband, Kevin. Ever the scene-stealer, Cheddar's antics and loveable smile always brought joy to the show's viewers.

Then, it is with a very heavy heart, that we have to report that Stewart the corgi, who played Cheddar, has died.

Check out one of Cheddar and Captain Holt's best moments:

In a simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking Instagram post, Stewart's owners announced the news to the pooch's fans, revealing that Stewart spent his final day at the beach where he "[froliced] in the surf" and was treated to an In & Out Burger. What a wonderful way to go.

Stewart was peacefully put to sleep later that day.

Their full post reads:

"My precious Stewart crossed the rainbow bridge today.

"We went to the beach (his favorite place) where he frolicked in the surf and then enjoyed a picnic lunch of In & Out burgers. We relaxed in the sun and just enjoyed each other’s company.

"Our veterinarian met us there later and Stewart went to sleep peacefully in my arms while listening to the sounds of the ocean.

"He was a one in a million kind of dog, he was my supaah staah."

The character first appeared on the show all the way back in season one, episode 16, titled 'The Party', but Stewart has been playing Ray and Kevin's Pembroke Welsh Corgi since season four, episode five, titled 'Halloween IV'.

His final appearance was in season six, episode 16, in an episode called 'Cinco de Mayo'.

Since the news broke, fans of the show have flocked to social media to pay their respects and share their heartbreak at the loss of such a good boy:

Rest well, Stewart. You'll be missed dearly from the precinct!
